Juneteenth, or Freedom day, is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of Slavery in Texas, and more generally the emancipation of African slaves throughout the Confederate South on June 19. Features headliner Step Afrika! dance company from Washington, D.C. Other performers include Unity in the Community choir, Martin Luther King Male Chorus, Jean English from Harlem Heights. 6 to 9:45 p.m.: West Virginia International Film Festival presents Oscar-Nominated Animated and Live Action Shorts. Underground Cinema at Taylor Books, 226 Capitol St. First 50 minutes of animated shorts is family-oriented programming, with an on-screen warning for those with children for the final 35-minute film that is not. Live action shorts begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
7:30 p.m.: The Charleston Civic Chorus Concert. Charleston Baptist Temple Sanctuary, 209 Morris St. Program features works by American composer, including arrangements in American folk music, folk hymns and spirituals.
